Literacy Challenge
Thanks to the Plattsburgh Sunrise Rotary Club and Plattsburgh Press-Republican, some of the region's best and brightest come together on the first Saturday in March. The attraction is the annual Literacy Challenge, a 32-team, single-elimination competition to determine who knows the most about history, sports, science, literature, current events and more. This battle of wits supports the local chapter of the Literacy Volunteers of America. The best and brightest in 2005 came from the Peru Lions Club, which bested a team of physicians representing the Clinton County Medical Society in the championship match. It's our idea of March Madness with an intellectual twist. Rotarians serve as quiz masters, timers, judges, and set up the four competition areas at Champlain Centre. We also field a team, but this year we aren't talking about their performance.
