Plattsburgh, New York (May 3, 2024) – The Sunrise Rotary Mayor's Cup Regatta & Festival Committee
is currently seeking nominations from the community for their prestigious 2024 “Spirit of Ianelli”
Award.

What is the “Spirit of Ianelli” Award?
The "Spirit of Ianelli" Award was established in 2010 in honor of the late Mayor John Ianelli, former
Mayor of the City of Plattsburgh and co-founder of the Mayor’s Cup Regatta in 1978. This honor is
bestowed upon one individual or individuals – sailor or landlubber – who exemplifies the same
“community does matter” spirit that inspired Mayor Ianelli over 45 years ago, empowering our lake
community to thrive, not only on race day, but every day.

Seven-year-old Mia Taylor from Peru, NY, was named the 2023 “Spirit of Ianelli” Award honoree. Mia,
with the help of her mother, created “Mia’s Spreading Love Mission” on Facebook. Mia’s missions
have spread love in the community in a variety of different ways. Last year Mia personally volunteered
at local nursing homes, organized school supply drives, coordinated Christmas and Easter drives,
donated hats and gloves to local classrooms, raised money to support local book fairs, and sent
birthday cards to nursing home residents, community members facing serious illnesses, and others
that needed a reason to smile and know they are not forgotten.
“Mia’s spirit for giving is amazing,” said Sunrise Rotary President Jim Snook. “Her passion and energy
for giving to those in need sets an example for all of us in the community – of all ages. Mia truly does
embody the ‘community does matter’ spirit.”
